Since my last blog entry 2 months ago, my beloved husband, Lloyd, passed away in palliative care. The journey continues to be difficult but in my grief, I am reminded that I have been on sacred ground. Especially grateful for nursing care of Lloyd and support for myself during his last days), I am reminded of Hubert Doucet’s description of palliative care (as referenced in The Moral Work of Nursing).
Palliative care, the purpose of which is to enable people to live out the last part of their lives with meaning and grace…,makes us aware of the most fundamental aspect of ethics, and more. The art of dying, as embraced by palliative care, somehow leads us to go beyond such care to better appreciate its meaning.
Reflections of the experience offer more questions to ponder, memories to treasure, and grief work to be done–work that takes me to the depths of my soul. So, for now, blogs are on hold.
